Dr. Michael Jiaravuthisan, or Dr. J, is a board-certified dermatologist with a lifelong passion for skin health. Growing up in a family rooted in medical science, his journey into dermatology was inspired from an early age. After earning his medical degree from McMaster University and completing his dermatology residency at the University of Toronto, Dr. J has accumulated over a decade of experience. He brings a wealth of knowledge and a compassionate approach to Surface Dermatology, where he’s a valued leader, dedicated to providing exceptional care and helping patients achieve their best skin health.
Role and Responsibilities
Can you describe your role at Surface Dermatology clinic?
As the co-founder and lead dermatologist at Surface Dermatology, my focus is on diagnosing and treating a wide range of skin concerns. With several years dedicated to specializing in skin cancer and procedural dermatology, I am committed to providing transparent, well-informed care. I believe that empowering my patients to make educated decisions leads to the best outcomes, while also helping to ease the strain on our healthcare system.
Experience and Background
What led you to specialize in dermatology?
My passion for dermatology began during medical school, where I was captivated by how skin health reflects overall well-being. The complexity of skin conditions, combined with their visible impact on patients' lives, captivated my interest. Dermatology allows me to blend my love for medical science with a personalized, patient-centered approach—helping people achieve both healthier skin and greater confidence. It’s the perfect specialty for me because it offers the opportunity to make a real, tangible difference in my patients' everyday quality of life.
Patient Interaction
How do you approach patient care and interaction?
My approach to patient care is always centered around the individual. Listening and truly understanding each patient’s unique concerns is my top priority. Building trust is essential, and I make sure every patient feels comfortable, heard, and fully informed about their treatment options. I believe that when patients feel empowered and confident in their care, it leads to better outcomes and a more positive experience overall.
Challenges and Solutions
What challenges do you face in your role and how do you address them?
One of the key challenges I face in dermatology is managing the high volume of referrals for skin cancer and lesions of concern. Our healthcare system, particularly cancer centers, has been under considerable strain for many years. It’s incredibly important to see these cases promptly, as this not only helps in early detection but also yields better outcomes for our patients.
Future Outlook
What are your future goals and outlook for your practice?
My future goals for my practice center around providing a premium patient experience in an environment where everyone feels comfortable and cared for. I believe that in light of the strain on Canada’s healthcare system, many healthcare experiences overlook the essential focus on patient care and connection. I want to change that within this field by creating a space where patients feel heard and genuinely taken care of.
By prioritizing compassionate communication and personalized care, I hope to empower my patients to take charge of their skin health while ensuring they receive the support they need. My outlook is optimistic; I truly believe that by fostering a welcoming environment, we can elevate the standard of care in dermatology and make a positive impact on our patients’ experiences.
